VIJAYAWADA, APRIL 12. The Andhra Pradesh Government Doctors' Association (Modern Medicine) has condemned the charge that doctors of the Government General Hospital (GGH) are taking money through touts to perform operations. The doctors have made the statement in the light of the city police apprehending a `tout' collecting money from patients. The president of the association's GGH unit, K. Prabha Devi, and the secretary, G. Joseph Raju, said at a press conference on Tuesday that all the doctors of the Government hospital were service-minded and they would not stoop to the level of taking money through touts. "We will earn 10 times more than our salary, if we worked with a private hospital. But, we are still with the Government because we want to do free service to the poor," Dr. Joseph Raju said. The association secretary said the doctors were aware that some employees in the lower rung were demanding money from patients. They even heard reports that some employees were using the name of doctors to collect bribes.
Cases against touts
He said the doctors were already overburdened with work and it was up to the Anti-Corruption Bureau to book cases against touts taking money from patients. There were cases of touts, claiming to be RMPs or doctors with medical degrees, befriending Government hospital doctors and exploiting desperate patients. They stoutly denied the charge that doctors were accepting money through touts. The professor of Orthopaedics, Dattu, against whom allegations were made, said it was difficult to distinguish between those who were attending on patients and those encouraging touts.
