Red-letter day for madarsa

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, APRIL 12. A non-decrepit building in Musheerabad had a celebratory air around it. Children, mostly girls were waiting expectantly for their VIP guests. Tuesday was certainly an eventful day for students, teachers and managing committee members of Madarsa-Ul-Uloom in Musheerabad.

The religious school set up by the local Iron and Plastic Scrap Merchants' Association was slated to get recognition from the Government to run classes up to seventh class and also showcase its learning improvement initiative, perhaps the first such programme taken up in any madarsa in the State.

CAP initiative

Changes were made in the school curriculum in the last one year when the Children and Police Project (CAP), catalysed by the Dr. Reddy's Foundation (DRF), with the help of local community used the madrasa to provide dropouts with formal full-time quality education along with religious education.

The CAP started using its `whole school development tool kit' comprising bridge school methodology for rapid learning, teacher training, curriculum development supplements, classroom processes and parent-community involvement in the school development.

The CAP Project Director, Gurpreet K. Bhatia, said that two hours of religious education and four hours of non-religious subjects following the Urdu syllabus prescribed by the Government are taught besides improving communication skills, career guidance and personality development.

So impressed was Chandramouli, Project Director of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan, that he said recognition would be given to the madrasa till 10th class in the coming years. He also announced sanctioning of three educational volunteers, two computers and grants to eight teachers. "You should also have a intermediate and degree college here," he observed as the delighted gathering burst in applause.
