Two held on charge of abduction

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, APRIL 12. Two persons were arrested today in connection with the abduction of a bank employee, Krishnamurthy, 49, and extortion of money from him in captivity. The police said the accused were Reghu, 33, of Perunthani, and Rathesh, 23, of Puzhikunnu. The police are on the look out for five more persons in connection with the case.

Mr. Krishnamurthy was kidnapped on April 6 from Kaithamukku while he was on his way to office on his scooter. Four persons blocked his way with motorcycles and hustled him into an autorickshaw. He was taken to Pallichal and detained in a house till 5 p.m. The youth demanded Rs. 50,000 for his release.

The police said that around 6 p.m., Mr. Krishnamurthy was brought to West Fort. He paid the youth Rs. 5,000 which he borrowed from a friend's house. The accused took Mr. Krishnamurthy's scooter, stating that it would be returned when the money demanded by them was paid in full. On April 8, Mr. Krishnamurthy filed a complaint with the Pettah Police.

The police said Mr. Krishnamurthy used to lend money on interest through Reghu. Reghu took commission for arranging considerable sums of money as short-term loans. The two fell apart when Mr. Krishnamurthy started directly dealing with those seeking loans.

According to the police, Reghu had arranged `habitual offenders' for the abduction and extortion.

The accused were produced before the court on the charges of kidnap, extortion, conspiracy, assault and wrongful detention. They were remanded to 14 days in judicial custody.
