NEW DELHI, APRIL 12. Nine people allegedly involved in cases of contract killing, highway robberies and motor vehicle thefts reported from Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh were arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi police on Monday. The police claim to have seized stolen property worth over Rs. 1 crore from them. According to the police, Inspector Anil Dureja of the Special Cell received a tip that some robbers would come near Ghewra More in North-West Delhi in a Hyundai Accent on Monday. Subsequently, the police laid a trap and intercepted the vehicle. However, the suspects got down from the vehicle and opened fire at the police party. The police fired in retaliation and overpowered both the accused, Virender and Anil, residents of Haryana. The police said two country-made pistols and three live cartridges were recovered from them. During interrogation, the accused disclosed that they had stolen a truck loaded with cartons containing Nirma washing powder and soaps at Dharuhera in Haryana and their accomplices were taking the vehicle to a godown at Mundka in West Delhi. At their instance, the police intercepted the vehicle and arrested three other accused, later identified as Kishan, Dharambir and Pawan. The team then raided the Mundka godown and seized another truck loaded with aluminium rods and sheets. Four more gang members, Farid, Farim Khan, Subhash and Baljit Singh, were arrested from there. The accused disclosed that they had robbed it from a driver at Jaipur in Rajasthan on April 9. Investigations revealed that the gang members had killed at least three persons in Haryana on contract. During interrogation, Virender allegedly disclosed that he was initiated into the world of crime in 1996 and was involved in more than 17 cases of murder, attempt-to-murder, dacoity and robberies. He had been declared proclaimed offender in six cases. His accomplice, Anil, was involved in 10 criminal cases, while Farid had been named in more than 20 cases of murder, vehicle thefts and assault on police personnel. While further probe into their other suspected involvement is on, the police have impounded their Accent and a Tata-407.
