BANGALORE, APRIL 12. The Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners and Agents' Association has threatened to launch an agitation if the Government does not revoke the ban on sand mining in Kolar district. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, ordered the ban a few days ago after a delegation, led by the Minister for Agriculture, K. Srinivasa Gowda, urged him to stop sand mining on riverbeds of Kolar district where the groundwater level has declined sharply. The delegation had informed the Chief Minister that removal of sand from the riverbeds brought down the groundwater level in Chintamani, Gauribidanur and Srinivaspura taluks. Roads in the district were damaged because of transportation of sand in lorries. G.R. Shanmugappa, association president, told presspersons here on Tuesday that the ban affected the livelihood of over 20,000 workers engaged in the business. Over 1,500 lorries, which transported sand from Kolar district to Bangalore, had stopped plying for 10 days, he said. "Though the Government promised to identify and earmark 738 spots for sand mining last year, no action has been taken. We are ready to take up mining only in the identified places. But imposing a ban without earmarking places is not fair," he said.
Meeting today
Mr. Shanmugappa said the association members had met the officials of the Mines and Geology Department and requested them to revoke the ban. "We will meet the Chief Minister on Wednesday and place our demand for revoking the ban. We will launch an agitation if our demand is not considered," he added.
