Eesha Karvade becomes WGM

DUBAI: Pune-based Eesha Karavade became a Woman Grandmaster and Delhi-boy 12-year-old prodigy Parimarjan Negi collected his second International Master norm after drawing their ninth and final round matches in the Dubai Open chess tournament here on Tuesday.

Eesha drew with Syria's Adel Omearat to finish with 4.5 points needed to complete her final title-norm. Eesha's earlier norms came in the Pune International Open and World junior championship at Kochi last year. The 17-year-old joins the Indian list including S. Vijayalakshmi, K. Humpy, Aarthie Ramaswamy, Nisha Mohota, S. Meenakshi, D. Harika and Swati Ghate.

Negi accepted an early draw-offer from Filipino Jayson Gonzales and reached five points required to gain his second IM-norm. Negi's maiden norm in Germany in 2003 had made him the youngest IM-norm holder in the country. Presently rated at 2349, Negi needs to add another norm and raise his rating to 2400 to qualify for the IM title.

Another youngster G. Rohit won his last round but fell short of the IM-norm due to a technical reason. He played four GMs, as against the stipulation of five titled players, in nine rounds. Rohit can appeal to FIDE, the world body, to recognise his `norm' since he had met all other norm-requirements.

The charge of the young brigade was evident at the top when 15-year old untitled Chinese Wang Hao claimed honours with seven points. In the final round he defeated Georgia's Giorgi Kacheishvili while six of the top-seven boards produced draws.

The results (ninth round): Bu Xiangzhi (Chn) (6.5) drew with Zhang Pengxiang (Chn) (6); Zhang Zhong (Chn) (6.5) drew with Evgenij Miroschnichenko (Ukr) (6.5); Ashot Anastasian (Arm) (6.5) drew with Viorel Iordachescu (Mda) (6.5); Giorgi Kacheishvili (Geo) (6) lost to Wang Hao (Chn) (7); Kiril Georgiev (Bul) (6) drew with Merab Gagunashvili (Geo) (6.5).
