Effort to update database and information network

KAKINADA: The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, a premier research organisation under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi, is conducting a National Marine Fisheries census from April 15 to May 15.

A Senior Scientist in charge of the Kakinada centre of the institute, R. Narayana Kumar, said on Wednesday that it was sponsored by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Ministry of Agriculture.

The aim was to update the national database on fisher population and establish an information network for the Indian fisheries sector.

He said availability of reliable and updated data was an important requirement for planning strategic inputs in the development sector as well evolving appropriate policies for fisheries management.

Salient features

Giving the salient features of the programme, Dr. Kumar said that the census would be conducted simultaneously in all the coastal States and Union Territories, covering over 3,000 marine fishing villages located in the 6,200 km belt.

As per conservative estimates, he said over 7-8 lakh households would be contacted by some thousand enumerators.

Basic information would be gathered through personal interview and it would be registered in specially prepared schedules.

It covers information regarding the family size, education, occupation status, inventory of craft and gear and other fishing related equipment apart from information on skill acquisition through specialised training.

Dr. Kumar said that during the first phase of the census, all maritime States, except Tamil Nadu and the Union Territory of Pondicherry, would be covered.

In the second phase, the Tamil Nadu coast, including Pondicherry, would be covered soon after the tsunami rehabilitation process was completed.

Upon completion of the census, he said the information gathered would be scrutinised, coded and stored in the form of electronic database, with user-friendly data retrieving interface. The processed data would be submitted to the Department of Animal Husbandry for use in planning and management process.
