Campaign to continue mid-day meal scheme

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: In a unique campaign the Child Rights Protection Forum (CRPF) and the M. V. Foundation have collected one lakh signatures from nine districts to appeal to the Government to continue the mid-day meal scheme during the summer vacation.

A delegation led by Shantha Sinha, Magsaysay awardee and secretary trustee of the MV Foundation and C. Yadaiah, Convenor of the CRPF, presented a memorandum to the School Education Minister, N. Rajyalaxmi.

When the Minister expressed doubts over monitoring the programme during holidays, they told her that in 2003-04, sarpanches and their secretaries performed the task.

They said 77 lakh children who now depended on the scheme would be deprived of food.

The worst affected would be those in drought-hit districts, hence the Government should not close the scheme.
