Police, Maoists exchange fire near Orissa border

VISAKHAPATNAM: There was an exchange of fire between CPI(Maoist) members and the police at Kumuluvada village of G.K. Veedhi mandal on the Andhra-Orissa border at 11.30 a.m. on Wednesday. The firing continued for 15 minutes but there were no casualties on either side. A radio set and four pairs of jungle shoes were recovered. - Staff Reporter

Naxal couple surrenders

KURNOOL: A naxalite couple -- Ramabhimudu alias Uday and Saroja alias Vanaja -- surrendered before B. Malla Reddy, SP, here on Wednesday. Uday, commander of Nallamala West Area Special Guerrilla Squad, and his wife were allegedly involved in several offences, including bus burning and attack on MPP office at Dornala. - Staff Reporter

Teachers not to boycott SSC spot valuation

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Teachers Organisations' Struggle Committee will not boycott SSC spot valuation work in view of the assurances given by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. B. Mohan Reddy, K. Jogaiah, A. Anantaramulu and N.V. Raghavaiah, who constitute the steering committee, on Wednesday demanded immediate release of orders on increased remuneration for the valuation work. - Staff Reporter

Work on Thotapally spillway begins

VIZIANAGARAM: Work on Thotapally spillway was launched on Wednesday amid police security with the Collector promulgating prohibitory orders at the project site. The project Superintending Engineer, B. Pratap Babu, said that if the spillway work was not completed before the onset of monsoon, loss would be heavy. The work had been suspended following a demand by farmers that compensation be paid to them. - Staff Reporter

Variable DA hike for beedi workers

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Beedi Workers Union has said that the variable dearness allowance (VDA) for beedi workers has increased by 12 points and has come into force on April 1. Its president, V. Krishna, on Wednesday said the price index had increased from 483.19 to 495 points. Accordingly, beedi manufacturers would now pay Rs. 29.40 per 1,000 beedis. - Staff Reporter

School headmaster murdered

BHIMAVARAM: A school headmaster at Akiveedu, Yadavalli Bhimeswara Rao (50), was allegedly killed here on Wednesday. The police said Rao was axed to death while returning home after attending a court case. The police recovered lethal weapons reportedly left behind by assailants from the scene of offence. The police said one Bisani Ramakrishna was believed to have nursed a grudge against Rao for implicating him in the case and conspired to eliminate him. - Staff Reporter

Lightning claims two lives

CUDDAPAH: Two girls died on being struck by lightning in Cuddapah district on Tuesday night. Chinna Reddamma (14) was fatally struck by lightning during a drizzle in Guvvalacheruvu in Ramapuram mandal. Meanwhile, B. Reddamma (5), who was playing in the open, was struck dead by lightning in Chinnagollapalle village in Tsundupalle mandal.

Sarpanch hurt in mishap

CUDDAPAH: The sarpanch of Brahmanapalle, Venkateswara Naidu, and two others sustained severe injuries when their tractor was hit by a lorry near Brahmanapalle in Rajampet mandal on Wednesday.

Mr. Naidu was rushed to SVIMS at Tirupati. His aide, Bukka Chandra, and the lorry driver were also hurt, according to the police. - - Staff Reporter

Man dies in accident

CUDDAPAH: A retired fire services employee, Pedda Subbanna (59), was fatally knocked down by an unidentified vehicle on Mangampet bypass road in Obulavaripalle mandal on Tuesday night, according to the Obulavaripalle SI, Ashok Reddy. -- - Staff Reporter

Farmer dies in collision

NELLORE: A farmer died and three others were injured in a collision between two autorickshaws at Padamati Kandriga village of Chejerla mandal. The dead farmer has been identified as Venkataiah (60). The injured have been admitted in hospital.

Blood required

TIRUPATI: The SVIMS hospital urgently requires six units of "A Negative" (A -) group blood for performing a heart surgery on a poor patient admitted under the `Pranadanam' scheme.

Interested donors can contact the SVIMS Blood Bank in-charge immediately.

RJD to contest civic poll

CUDDAPAH: The Rashtriya Janata Dal will contest the ensuing municipal elections in Cuddapah district, its State vice-president, A. Ramana Yadav, told newsmen here on Wednesday. - Staff Reporter
