Meetings to allay fears of farmers on new Veeranam scheme

Agriculture, drinking water needs won't be hit: Collector


  • No deep borewells to be sunk
  • Water to be taken at a depth of 20 mts
  • Only 15 per cent of surplus to be used
  • Govt. urged to reconsider decision

    KUMBAKONAM: Official meetings were held at Kumbakonam and Thiruvidaimaruthur in Thanjavur district today to allay the fears of people regarding the New Veeranam secheme.

    The Collector, M.Veera Shanmugha Moni, who presided over the two meetings, reiterated that in no way the scheme would affect the agriculture and drinking water needs of the people of Thanjavur district.

    He clarified that no deep borewells were to be sunk, but only the water in the sub-surface would be taken from the Kollidam. The sub-surface water would also be taken at a depth of 20 mts.

    The Collector said that already various combined water schemes were functioning from Kollidam and out of 2500 million litres of surplus water available in the river, fifteen per cent of the water (350 million litres) was utilised for various combined drinking water schemes and the New Veeranam scheme.

    Farmers said that steps should be taken to ensure that there was no underground water depletion in the area due to the digging of borewells in Kollidam.

    Some of the farmers who attended the meeting appealed to the Government to reconsider its decision to implement the scheme as it would definitely affect the agriculture and drinking water needs of the area.

    Sivakumar, Chief Engineer, Chennai Metrowater, Elangovan, Superintending Engineer, Tamil Nadu Water supply and Drainage Board (TWAD Board), Nallusamy, Superintending engineer, Public Works Department (PWD), Ramadoss, Joint director of Agriculture, (in charge), participated in the meeting and explained the people about the scheme.
