Ganja seized

Bidar: The police seized 20 kg of ganja from a person when he was reportedly trying to sell it outside colleges in Aurad on Monday.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of officials raided the house of Narayan Pawar in Keshav Tanda and seized the narcotic. — Staff Correspondent

Speed governors compulsory

BANGALORE: The Transport Department has made it compulsory for transport vehicles registered in the State to have speed governors to avoid accidents. The Transport Commissioner, Om Prakash, said in a statement here today that the transport vehicles of five categories — stage carriage, contract carriage, maxi-cabs, buses used by educational institutions and goods vehicles with gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 3,000 kg and above, including the load. The contract carriage vehicles given special permission for a round trip to certain areas, and those with all-India permits have been exempted from the restriction, he said. — Staff Reporter

50 more students debarred

BANGALORE: Fifty more candidates were debarred for alleged malpractice by the Pre-university (PU) Department during the second year PU examination in the State on Wednesday. The Hindi, Telugu, Urdu and Sanskrit papers of the examination were held. Of the debarred students, 19 were from Gulbarga, 10 from Bagalkot, eight from Gadag, six from Dharwad, three from Haveri and one each from Bangalore South, Belgaum, Davangere and Hassan districts. — Staff Reporter

Seven officials suspended

Bangalore: The State Government has suspended seven officers of taluk panchayats, including three executive officers, for serious irregularities attracting punishment under the Anti-Corruption Act. Government Orders were issued today. The officials had been indicted by the Lokayukta and its police had launched prosecution proceedings. — Staff Reporter

Banking panel

Bangalore: The independent Commission on banking and financial policy, set up by the All-India Bank Officers' Confederation, will hold having its sitting at Hotel Kaniska, Gandhinagar, here on Friday between 11 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. The commission, headed by S.P. Mathematics exam on Saturday

MANGALORE: The mathematics examination of second year pre-university examination, which was scheduled to be held last Friday, will be held in Dakshina Kannada on Saturday between 9 a.m. and noon. A press release from the Deputy Director, Department of Pre-university Education here said the re-examination will be held in pre-designated examination centres in the district. The hall ticket already issued by the Pre-university Board will be valid, the release added. — Staff Correspondent

Move on service charge criticised

Bangalore: The noted film artiste and BJP MLC, "Mukhyamantri" Chandru, has criticised the reported attempt to impose service charge on cinemagoers in the name of maintaining cinemas. He has threatened to move the court if a decision is taken. Speaking to presspersons, Mr. Chandru urged the Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramiah, not to "give in to pressure" from exhibitors. — Staff Reporter

TB patients

HUBLI: Under the Revised National Tuberculosis Prevention Programme implemented in Dharwad district in 2003, and as many as 1,738 patients with the disease were identified, and 418 of them cured through appropriate treatment, according to a release. As many as1,831 patients with tuberculosis were identified in 2004, and 691 of them were treated in the intensive care category and 232 under continued treatment category, Myageri, District Tuberculosis Prevention Officer, has said in the release. Persons with persistent cough can visit the Tuberculosis Prevention Centre at KIMS Hospital for free diagnosis. They can dial 2374015 for details. — Staff Correspondent

Three arrested

Raichur: The Raichur police arrested Veeraswamy, alias Roopkumar (18), Jagadish (36), and Chennaveeranna (37) in connection with a murder case reported in the city recently. They have been remanded in judicial custody. The accused had reportedly murdered Sugappa when the latter was being treated at the District Civil Hospital. — Staff Correspondent

Man arrested

Bidar: The Bidar police arrested a 40-year-old man on the charge of raping a 10-year-old girl in Devgiri in Humnabad taluk on Monday. The girl is said to be related to the accused. The accused, Shivraya, has been remanded in judicial custody. — Staff Correspondent

Minor girl raped

Bijapur: A minor girl was allegedly raped by three persons at Hirebevanur village in Indi taluk in Bijapur district on Tuesday.

The police said the accused barged into the 12-year-old girl's house when she was alone, dragged her to a field and reportedly raped her.

They are said to have burnt the girl's clothes before fleeing the scene. On a complaint, the Indi police registered a case and arrested the three persons. — UNI

Bitten by snake

Raichur: Thimmaiah (55) was bitten by a snake when he piling haystack in his field in Gunjalli village near here on Tuesday. He died when he was being taken to Gandhal for treatment. The Yergera Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

IAPT certificate for Gulbarga boy

GULBARGA: Santosh S. Hirapur, a Pre-University Course second year student of Sharanabasaveshwar Residential Public School, has been awarded merit certificate for topping among Karnataka students who took the National Physics Standard Examination in Physics organised by the Kanpur chapter of the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT).

According to a communication received by the school from the association here on Tuesday, Santosh Hirapur has been declared a topper in the examination and has been awarded the merit certificate. - Special Correspondent

Bank organises meet

Udupi: The Regional Office of the Syndicate Bank organised a cashew processors' meet of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts here on Tuesday.

Presiding over the meet, the Deputy General Manager of the bank, D.N. Kamath, explained the role played by the bank in financing the cashew industry. The bank had also financed imports and exports related to the industry. This industry is based in rural areas and is labour intensive. It provides employment to the weaker sections, he said. - Staff Correspondent

Nodal officers appointed

DHARWAD: District nodal officers have been appointed to oversee rectification of the lacunae in the distribution of drinking water in all the 67 wards in the twin cities of Hubli-Dharwad.

This was stated by Gourav Gupta, Deputy Commissioner, at an official meeting convened here on Wednesday to work out a strategy for arranging for the satisfactory supply of water to both urban and rural areas of the district. The number of tankers for the supply of water has been increased from 25 to 40. - Special Correspondent

Corporator convicted

Belgaum: Balu Mangutkar, corporator, has been sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment for abetting suicide. The order was passed by the IIIrd Fast Track Court Judge, J.B. Jattennavar, here on Wednesday.

The public prosecutor, Biradar Patil G.A., told The Hindu that the accused was arrested under Section 306 of IPC for harassing a college girl who committed suicide about two years ago.

The accused is married and has a son. Complaints were made to the police, but the accused did not stop following the girl. Her parents then shifted to Khanapur. But the corporator's harassment continued and the girl committed suicide at her home. The Khanapur police had arrested him. - Staff Correspondent

Public cautioned

BANGALORE: The Bangalore Development Authority has warned the public against buying plots developed by Sri Krishna Gardens and Sri Krishna Orchards at Pattanagere and Mylasandra village of Kengari hobli. Contrary to the developers' claims, they have not secured authorisation from the BDA to build the layouts, an official release said. The BDA had issue a notice to the developers in November 2003 warning them against promoting the layout as an authorised one. - Staff Reporter

Man electrocuted

MANGALORE: A man died and another was injured when they accidentally came in contact with a high tension power line at Iddya in Suratkal police station limits on Tuesday. The police said that Divyaraj (22), a resident of Katla and Vaman (26), a resident of Suratkal, were fixing a name board for a shop at Mangalore Urban Development Authority shopping complex. The police said the two reportedly did not see the power line and the board they were hauling came in contact with the line, electrocuting them. While Divyaraj was thrown to the ground below on impact and died instantly, police said Vaman suffered extensive burns. Suratkal police are investigating. - Staff Correspondent
