This Day That Age
The 162-year-old zamindari system ended in West Bengal on April 15 - Bengali New Year Day. A crowd of more than a thousand people greeted the announcement ending the system introduced by Lord Cornwallis in 1793. The announcement was made by West Bengal's Revenue Minister, Mr. S.K. Basu, at the Murshidabad Durbar Hall where Bengal's last independent nawab, Sirajudoula, had kept court till 1757. The Chief Minister, Dr. B.C. Roy, described it as an epoch-making change.
