Karat at the helm

This refers to the editorial, "Karat at the helm" (April 13). Mr. Karat, a relatively young and scholarly theoretician, possesses excellent communist credentials. His no-nonsense attitude justifies his election. Given that he has been playing a crucial role in keeping the alliance between his party and the UPA Government going, he is indeed the right choice.

Tharcius S.Fernando,
Chennai

It is heartening that Mr. Karat has assumed the reins of the CPI (M). His role in the formation of the UPA Government and in chalking out the Common Minimum Programme is commendable. The CPI (M), under his leadership, can regulate and moderate the policies of the Centre vis-à-vis the Left parties both inside and outside Parliament.

D. Manikyala Rao,
Gudivada, A.P.
