Glimmer of hope

The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's statement that the doors have not been closed on peace talks with the naxalites presents a glimmer of hope. The Maoists should come forward to utilise the opportunity if they are genuinely interested in peace. They should realise that abductions, extortions and killings will only prove counterproductive. They should not interpret the Government's voluntary offer of talks as a sign of weakness.
