LONDON: A new political row over asylum and immigration erupted on Thursday after a failed asylum-seeker from Algeria was jailed for 17 years for allegedly plotting to terrorise Britain by infecting public places with poisonous chemical substances. Kamel Bourgass, who is already serving a life sentence in connection with the killing of a police officer two years ago, was convicted for conspiracy to "cause disruption, fear or injury'' by using poisons or explosives. His four alleged co-conspirators were acquitted. Police alleged that he had been engaged in making deadly chemicals such as ricin and cyanide in a north London flat with the alleged intention of smearing them on car doors, handles and articles of daily use like face creams and toothbrushes. Security experts, however, acknowledged that the plot was not intended to kill. Bourgass (32) had his asylum application rejected three years ago but reportedly "melted'' into the crowd until the police "stumbled'' on him in January 2003.
