Global tenders for base camp development

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) would recruit more women guards for its major temples in different parts of the State.

Addressing a press conference at Sabarimala on Thursday, the Board president, G. Raman Nair, and members, Punalur Madhu and M. B. Sreekumar, said that the decision to post sufficient number of women guards was to ensure effective crowd management, especially streamlining of the throng of woman devotees at various major temples during the rush days.

Forestland

The TDB authorities said that they had identified forestland at seven different locations, including Attappady in Palakkad and Kakkayam in Kozhikode, for compensatory afforestation in lieu of the 305 acres of land to be allotted to it in the Periyar Tiger Reserve and at Nilackal for providing adequate basic facilities for Sabarimla pilgrims.

Mr. Nair said that the Board had also written to the Chief Secretary, Palat Mohandas, that it was ready to remit the land value if the Government identified 305 acres of land required for compensatory afforestation so as to avoid any further delay in the transfer of the forestland identified for providing basic pilgrim facilities.

According to the TDB president, global tenders would be invited for the preparation of a long-term masterplan for the proposed base camp at Nilackal and its implementation.

The Board authorities also expressed the hope of completing all necessary formalities to facilitate the transfer of forestland to it by the Union Ministry of Forests and Environment in the next two months.

Moving platform

Mr. Raman Nair said that the expert team from the College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram (CET), had conducted a feasibility study on the proposed moving platform at the Ayyappa Temple precincts so as to avoid the push and pull of devotees for the holy darshan during the rush days of the pilgrim season.

Prasadom complex

The TDB chief had laid the foundation stone for the proposed Rs. 12-crore Prasadom Complex, near Malikappuram later in the afternoon.
