Religious fervour: Sikhs offering prayers in Tirupati on Thursday.
TIRUPATI: Tamil New Year was celebrated in the district in the areas contiguous to the Tamil Nadu border and those with a large number of Tamil inhabitants. There was a festive mood in Chittoor, Puttur, Nagari, Satyavedu, Sri Rangaraja Puram, Palasamudram and Varadaiahpalem areas situated close to the inter-State border, where the imaginary line means nothing to inhabitants of either side. People celebrated the day with enthusiasm and reverence. In Tirupati, the Tamil population visited various temples right from dawn.
Baisakhi
The Sikhs too observed their New Year's day, Baisakhi, at the lone Gurdwara in Tirupati at R.N. Mada Street. The congregation led by J.P. Dhan Singh offered prayers at the temple, which was richly decorated with flowers. Yogesh Mehta, working with the New Delhi-based Som Datt Builders, who had sponsored the event in the past, had come all the way to Tirupati to take part in the ritual, which was conducted in a grand manner. Langar, a mass lunch programme was conducted later, where a number of devotees were fed. The womenfolk sat in a circle to roll out rotis and cut vegetables for langar.
