AHMEDABAD: The leader of the Opposition in the Gujarat Assembly, Arjun Modhvadia, has demanded a CBI inquiry into the "role" played by the Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, and some government and police officers close to him in the Godhra train carnage and the post-Godhra communal riots in the State. Talking to media persons here today, Mr. Modhvadia, said the petition filed by the Additional Director-General of Police, R. B. Sreekumar, before the Central Administrative Tribunal questioning his supersession in promotion by the Modi Government, should be treated as an FIR and a CBI inquiry ordered on it. The Opposition leader said that though the CBI was already entrusted with the task of investigating the riot cases, these did not include the "role" played by the Chief Minister and some of the officers close to him as alleged by Mr. Sreekumar. While Mr. Sreekumar's petition was confined to the injustice meted out to him by the Government in promotion due to Mr. Modi's "personal bias" against him, the allegations made by him in the supporting evidence should serve as an eye-opener. Mr. Modhvadia said many allegations had been made against Mr. Modi and some of his officers of having "planned" the Godhra train carnage and the post-Godhra communal riots for winning the Assembly elections.
