Mangoes facing twin attack

LUCKNOW: Mango growers of Malihabad are struggling hard to protect the mango trees that are getting destroyed by unfavourable weather conditions.

The mango trees are affected by a disease called "Bunga", which has destroyed some of the crop. The lack of treatment by the growers has aggravated the condition.

``The loss is quite a bit. The growers are not able to wash away the insects. Mango grower just goes to shop, buys the pesticide and sprays according to the directions given by the shopkeeper. Due to inadequate information right amount of pesticide is not being sprayed on trees due to which not only trees are being hampered but also the mango growers,'' said Azimullah Khan, a mango grower.

Around 80 per cent of the mango crop till now has been destroyed in Malihabad, the city famous for its mangoes across the country.

Most of the growers blame weather change as the main cause for destruction of the mango crop.

``This year weather was not good. Growers who took care in the month of December were safe but others have been affected. Overall somewhere loss is more and somewhere it is less, but loss is there,'' said Azim Ali, another mango grower.

Meanwhile, the authorities say that they are making all possible efforts to save the crop. - ANI.
