Pakistan takes 3-0 lead

Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI: Pakistan veterans took an unassailable 3-0 lead in the four-match hockey Test series against India.

Olympians Shafqat Malik and Shabaz Jr. struck two goals apiece to spur Pakistan to a 5-3 win against the Indian veterans in the third Test at the Shivaji Stadium here on Thursday. The final Test of the series will be played in Amritsar.

Centre forward Ripu Daman and Olympian Jalaluddin raised the stakes as Indians took early lead. Ripu Daman struck in the sixth minute through a regulation goal before Satvir Singh converted a short corner to put Indians 2-0 ahead.

Pakistan would soon take over as the Indians slowed down. Malik's skill in converting penalty corners was very much on show as he struck on either side of the halves to help level the scores.

Forward Shabaz Jr. then probed intensively and was rewarded. With Saleem Sherwani in tow, Shabaz broke the Indian defence with ease. He scored in the 41st and 48th minutes before Tasneem Usmani (51st) almost took the match away from the Indians. In the last minute of the match Sanjiv Kumar found the consolation goal.

The result: Pakistan 5 (Shafqat Malik 25th and 34th, Shabaz Jr. 41st and 48th, Tasneem Usmani 51st) bt India 3 (Ripu Daman 6th, Satvir Singh 13th, Sanjiv Kumar 59th).
