New chief for Special Investigation Team

CHENNAI: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Kancheepuram, originally formed to investigate the `Kanchi Sankararaman murder case' is now being headed by a new Additional Superintendent of Police.

Bhavaneswari, Additional Superintendent of Police, Crime, Kancheepuram, is the new supervisory officer of the team, police sources told The Hindu .

Earlier, the team was led by S.P. Sakthivel, the then Additional Superintendent of Police, Prohibition Enforcement Wing, Kancheepuram. He was promoted on March 26 as Superintendent of Police, Enforcement, Chennai. A few days after his promotion, the Government granted him one-year extension of service. It was indicated that Mr. Sakthivel was likely to continue as the head of the SIT. But, later following his transfer, he was relieved of the charge and a new officer was asked to supervise the work of the team, the sources said.

The SIT was initially formed to probe the death of Sankararaman, manager of Sri Varadarajaperumal temple, Kancheepuram, on September 3 last year. The other major case pending with the team is the one relating to the assault on S. Radhakrishnan of Mandaveli in September 2002.

The charge sheet in the case is ready and is likely to be filed before this month-end. A couple of other cases, including the one pertaining to the attack on Madhavan, treasurer of the `Divya Desa Paarambariya Paadukaapu Peravai,' is also under investigation by the SIT.
