CHENNAI: On the occasion of Fire Services Day on Thursday, fire service personnel paid homage to their colleagues who lost their lives while on duty. Director of Fire and Rescue Services (FRS) S.K. Dogra laid a wreath at the martyrs' column in the department's erstwhile training school at Vallalar Nagar here. Deputy Director Madurapandian and other officials also placed wreaths. The day is being observed in memory of 66 personnel who died in an explosion at Victoria Dock in Mumbai in 1944. Coinciding with the occasion, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa handed over 26 fire tenders to the department at the Secretariat.
Modernisation
An official release here said she had sanctioned 84 new fire tenders at a cost of Rs.11.01 crores, as part of FRS modernisation. A total of 66 new vehicles were purchased and handed over to the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation's Coimbatore division for fixing the necessary equipment. Work on 26 vehicles was completed.
