CHENNAI: The Metropolitan Transport Corporation will soon get 350 more buses to replace old vehicles in its fleet, numbering 2,772. This is part of the fleet replacement plans announced by the Chief Minister in the Assembly in December 2003. The Chief Minister proposed to replace 2,500 dilapidated STC buses by March 2005 after a three-year-old girl was crushed to death under the wheels of an STC bus in Kumbakonam when she slipped through a hole on the floor of the vehicle. As per the announcement, the Government proposed to acquire 1,050 buses immediately. The STCs have so far received a mix of nearly 900 Euro stage I and II compliant buses with the latest batch of 101 vehicles received on March 24. While Euro II compliant buses were mainly allotted to the MTC and the State Express Transport Corporation, Euro I buses were allotted to the other five corporations. In the last financial year, 90 buses of MTC's fleet were replaced in two phases with a batch of 15 buses allocated in February. With the allocation of 10 more Euro-II compliant buses on March 24, the corporation's quota for the financial year got over, according to officials. The 10 replacement buses are plying in the following routes: 5A (Tambaram to T. Nagar), 1B (Tiruvottiyur to Tambaram) 54 (Poonamallee to Broadway).
