AMETHI: The Acharya Narendra Dev Agriculture University Vice-Chancellor today claimed that the Uttar Pradesh Government had expedited the payment of dues to sugarcane farmers after the local Member of Parliament, Rahul Gandhi, raised the issue in Parliament. Addressing a gathering at the inauguration of `Krishi Mela' here, the Vice-Chancellor, claimed that the State Government woke up to the issue after it was raised by Mr Gandhi in the Lok Sabha recently. He said like Amethi, his university would organise such fairs in various other districts of the State. The Narendra Dev University would also set up an agriculture centre at Gauriganj shortly, he added. Earlier, Mr Gandhi launched the magazine `Poorvanchal Kheti'. Earlier, listening to the grievances of farmers in his constituency, Rahul Gandhi today assured them that he would raise their problems inside the Parliament like he had done for the sugarcane farmers of Uttar Pradesh. Rahul, who kick-started his two-day tour of the constituency today, was approached by some farmers with their list of grievances outside the venue for a `Kisan Mela', which he inaugurated, in Gauriganj. He said he was aware of the hardships faced by them and would try his best to solve them. "If the need arises, I would also raise your issues in the Parliament like I had done for the cane growers," he said while receiving applications from the farmers and other local residents. The Congress MP is on a two-day visit to his constituency beginning today. -- PTI & UNI
