DGP draws up wish list

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The Director-General of Police (DGP), Swaranjit Sen, has said that the State Government will make a formal request to sanction two more battalions of the India Reserve at tomorrow's meeting on internal security in Delhi.

Talking to reporters here on Thursday before leaving for Delhi, Mr. Sen said the Government would also seek mine detectors, latest communication equipment and ammunition for AK-47 rifles for the purpose of training personnel as part of meeting the naxalite threat.

The two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) battalions that were withdrawn from the State during elections should be restored to help in anti-naxalite operations.

Security at stations

Mr. Sen said the posting of Officers on Special Duty (OSDs) in some more districts exclusively to tackle naxalites was under consideration. The police was also reviewing security of police stations.

He said that naxalites killed 91 persons so far this year as against 78 during last year. At the same time, 59 extremists were shot dead in 44 encounters during the year as against 52 in 73 encounters last year.

Faction violence

Referring to the performance of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted three months ago to check faction violence in Rayalaseema, he said it was facing a big challenge to gather information in 16 cases of Anantapur and one case in Cuddapah, which were transferred to it.

The team was looking into four cases of Anantapur, which had been closed as undetected by the CID. About the progress in the investigation into flouting of norms in the presentation of gallantry awards to some IPS officers, Mr. Sen said the CID was seized of the matter.

The statement of the pilot of a helicopter who facilitated them to fly was to be recorded. He said it was a fit case to initiate disciplinary action against the officers concerned.
