Naidu urged to head third front

NELLORE: The State organising secretary of the Telugu Desam Party, N. Prasannakumar Reddy, has urged the party supremo, N. Chandrababu Naidu, to lead the proposed third front. In a statement issued here on Thursday, he alleged that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government was ignoring the welfare of people and instead, was concentrating on its own survival. Under these circumstances, there was every need to form a third front. Mr. Reddy wanted N. Bhuvaneswari, wife of Mr. Naidu, to be made the president of TDP.

Paediatric cardiology clinic at SVIMS

TIRUPATI: Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) is holding a free paediatric cardiology clinic on April 16 at 8 a.m. for children below 12 years, who are suffering from heart ailments. A team of doctors led by K.M. Cherian of Chennai-based International Institute of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Diseases and the SVIMS Director, G. Subramanyam, will extend services to the poor children of the region.

Farmers' panel opens office

TIRUPATI: The Federation of Farmers' Associations (FFA) has opened its regional office in Muthyala Reddy Palle area of the town to cater for the needs of Chittoor, Cuddapah, Nellore and Anantapur districts. The chairman of Amara Raja group, G. Ramachandra Naidu, inaugurated the regional office on Wednesday. An awareness meet for farmers was held later.

Two buffaloes electrocuted

CUDDAPAH: Two buffaloes were electrocuted in parched fields of Yamavaram village in Muddanur mandal on Thursday. Ankireddy Raja Reddy, who owned the buffaloes, lamented that he had lost his livelihood and sought compensation.

Grievances redress cell

TIRUPATI: A grievance redress cell for students was opened at the TTD's Sri Venkateswara Arts College here on Wednesday. Declaring the cell open, K. Lakshminarayana, Commissioner, AP College Service Commission, observed that the role of the teaching community in moulding students should be redefined in the modern age. He also appealed to the teachers to move closer with students and understand their problems. P.N. Vasudevan is the convener of the cell.

House burgled

NELLORE: Unidentified persons gained entry into a house in Devarapalem village of Nellore rural mandal on Wednesday and took away 3.5 sovereigns of ornaments and Rs.5,000. According to available information, the culprits had earlier pretended to get their motorcycle repaired in the village to create an impression that they were on way to a nearby pilgrim centre.

ZP meet

NELLORE: The general body meeting of the Zilla Parishad will be held at the meeting hall on April 24 at 10.30 a.m.

Land encroachment

NELLORE: The police have taken into custody 12 persons for allegedly occupying land in Sajjapuram village. Earlier, the accused had an argument with the bonafide owner who informed the police about attempts to manhandle him.

Rs. 1 cr. for repair of bores

KHAMMAM: A sum of Rs 1 crore would be made available for immediate repair of bores, motors of the protected water supply schemes and extension of pipelines, according to the district Collector, R. J. Nimje. He took stock of the drinking water supply in different habitations of Dammapet mandal as part of the Praja Patham.

He sanctioned Rs 5 lakhs for construction of a new tank under the Food-for-Work programme in Mondivarru village on the occasion. - Staff Reporter

Minister's remarks irk Telangana Aikya Vedika

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Aikya Vedika has asked the Panchayat Raj Minister, J. C. Diwakar Reddy, to withdraw his controversial remarks on the future of Hyderabad if a separate State is carved out of Andhra Pradesh. The Vedika leaders -- T. Hanmandlu, P. Yadagiri and G. Siddappa -- at a press conference here on Thursday questioned the right of the Minister in demanding Union Territory status for Hyderabad in the event of Telangana State becoming a reality.

One killed, 60 huts destroyed in fire

VIZIANAGARAM: In a major fire accident at Logisa village in Gajapathinagaram mandal on Thursday afternoon, a woman was charred to death and 60 huts were destroyed.

According to the Revenue Divisional Officer, U.C.G. Nageswara Rao, the fire broke out in the house of one Macherla Hema (32). Flames spread quickly to other huts in Thadi Veedhi and Mangala Veedhi due to surface winds. The woman was burnt alive in the house. The loss of property was put at Rs. 8 lakhs. The local MLA, Padala Aruna visited the village.

Old couple ends lives

GUNTUR: An old couple committed suicide in their house at Kothapeta in Guntur city on Thursday. They were childless and suffering from several diseases. They were being fed by their relatives, but had none to look after them. Seventy-three-year-old Jinjanapu Rama Rao, and his wife Venkayamma, 70, were found hanging from the ceiling fan side by side this morning, the Kothapeta Sub-Inspector of Police, M. Suryanarayana Reddy, said.

Man stabs wife, commits suicide

Srikakulam: A head constable of Armed Reserve Police, Duppu Gaddenna (40), stabbed his wife and daughter around midnight on Wednesday and concluding that they were dead, hanged himself in his house at Etcherla in the early hours of Thursday. The condition of the two women, who were admitted to the hospital here, was stated to be safe.

Student electrocuted

CUDDAPAH: A 20-year-old degree student, Imdadullah of Nagarajupet in Cuddapah town, died when lightning struck him on Thursday evening. He was playing football with his friends in the Government Arts College grounds.

Governor's gesture

KHAMMAM: The Governor, Susheel Kumar Shinde, has sanctioned Rs. 51,000 from his discretionary grants as a contribution to Gurudakshina Foundation. A demand draft for the amount, drawn in favour of the Foundation, was sent by the Special Chief Secretary to the Collector, Rajendra Narendra Nimje, who in turn handed it over to Chekuri Kasaiah, founder Chairman of the foundation and former ZP chairman. The Governor took part in a programme organised by the Foundation in Khammam on March 9 last.

Five naxals surrender

KARIMNAGAR: Five Janasakthi naxalites belonging to the Jagtial forest area Bharath dalam surrendered before the Superintendent of Police, Devendra Singh Chouhan, here on Thursday.

In a press note, the SP said that the surrendered naxalites were the dalam members - E. Shankar alias Anjanna (55), MD Babu (28), J. Shekhar Rao alias Shekhar (24), E. Latchaiah alias Latchanna (30) and M. Madhu (22).

Pantry car service

HYDERABAD: The SCR will be introducing a pantry car in the weekly summer special trains between Hyderabad and Howrah (Train No.746/745) starting from April 15 and Hyderabad and Bikaner (Train No.719/720) starting from April 17.
