Remembering Ambedkar

NEW DELHI: To mark the 114th birth anniversary of B.R. Ambedkar various functions were organised across the country on Thursday where concerns were raised over discrimination against Dalits and Adivasis, according to a press release here by the Global Week of Action.

The functions focused on the theme "Dalits and their food sovereignty". In Kerala, an "Alternate Food Festival" was organised in which farmers and local people prepared traditional delicacies while in Gujarat tribal rallies were flagged off in three districts. The rallies focussed on the land rights of the tribals and their right over forest resources.

In Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Uttaranchal, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh, people from various walks of life participated in public meetings, signature campaigns and dharnas to mark the occasion.

Tributes paid

NEW DELHI: The All India State Bank Backward Classes Staff Union paid floral tributes at a portrait of Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar on the occasion of his 114th birth anniversary on Thursday.

Speaking on the occasion, the chief general secretary of the Union, Shanti Prakash, said that Dr. Ambedkar struggled throughout his life for the social, economic and political development of the country and worked for the upliftment of the weaker sections of society.

Mr. Prakash urged people belonging to Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Communities and minorities to unite to achieve the aims and objectives of the late leader.

Navratra mela

NEW DELHI: On the sixth day of Vasantik Navratra Mela, Goddess Durga was worshipped with full religious fervour by devotees at the Badri Bhagat Jhandewala Devi Temple here on Thursday.

According to a Badri Bhagat Jhandewala Temple Society release, there was a heavy rush of devotees throughout the day. A dedicated team of 150 sevadars worked round-the-clock to cope with the huge turnout.

Devotional songs were sung by Pramod Mehra and party at the temple complex on the occasion.

CBI raid

NEW DELHI: The CBI has conducted raids at the office of a consultant in the Capital, who allegedly supplied forged documents to pesticide companies for obtaining product clearance. CBI sources said incriminating documents were found from the premises of A. J. Mansuri at Jaitpur near Badarpur during the raids yesterday. Mansuri had been ``preparing and supplying false and forged certificates'' to different firms enabling them to obtain registration certificates for their products from the Union Agriculture Ministry, the sources said. The forged certificates were made by the consultant in the name of the Central Insecticides Board and Registration Committee of the Agriculture Ministry in Faridabad, they said.
