Directive to houseboat owners

ALAPPUZHA: A meeting of officials chaired by the District Collector, K.R. Muraleedharan, on Wednesday asked owners of houseboats with two stroke outboard engines to change the engines to inboard engines or four stroke outboard engines before May 31.

This is to minimise pollution.

The meeting also decided to cancel licences of those houseboats which failed to comply with the directive.

BSNL adalat

KOTTAYAM: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) would organise an adalat in the first week of May at the office of the Principal General Manager for their clients in Kottayam district, according to pressnote issued here.

Cases which had been put up for appeal to the Principal General Manager earlier, but were rejected, would be taken up during the adalat, the press note said.

Those who wish to register their complints should send the complaints along with copies of the earlier complaint to Mariamma John, Assistant General Manager (OP), BSNL, Pulickans Complex, Nagambadom, Kottayam before April 25.

Child drowned

Thrissur: A two-year-old girl, Anna, daughter of Kavungal Naiju, drowned in a canal at Vellikulangara, near here, on Thursday, according to the police. While playing, Anna slipped and fell into the canal, the police said.

Sandalwood conservation drive

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State-level sandalwood conservation rally organised by the Forest Department to create awareness among the public on the need for conserving forests will be inaugurated by the Speaker, Therambil Ramakrishnan, on the premises of the Kasaragod Collectorate on April 15. C.T. Ahamed Ali, MLA, will preside over the function. The planting of sandal saplings will be inaugurated by P. Karunakaran, MP. The Forest Department is observing the `World Earth Day' as the `Sandalwood Conservation Day.'

Janasabha on decentralisation

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Gazetted Officers Association will organise a Janasabha on `Decentralisation of Power' as part of its State conference being held in the capital city from May 21 to 23. The Janasabha, to be held at Kalagramam in the nearby Karakulam panchayat will focus on aspects such as the centralisation trends in the State which had set an example by devolving power, financial resources and responsibility to the local self-governments.

Deposit mobilisation drive

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cooperative Deposit Mobilisation Drive, which has achieved the thumping success of mobilising more than twice the targeted amount, is coming to an end tomorrow. The drive, which is the 26th in the sector, managed to mop up Rs.964.3 crores in the place of the targeted Rs.400 crores within 31 days. The primary societies top the list with deposits totalling Rs.581.09 crores as against the targeted Rs.282.3 crores followed by urban banks with Rs.78.71 crores as against the targeted Rs. 36.2 crores.

Grace marks

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The NCC cadets of the State are to get ten per cent grace marks for the Plus Two examination. An official press note said on Wednesday that they should have passed the A or B Certificate examination. They should also have participated in one of the following camps — TSC, RCTC, NID, All India Trekking Expedition or ALC. The applications of candidates who fulfil the conditions would be accepted at the NCC unit offices till April 18. Details can be had from the nearest NCC office.
