THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The National Informatics Centre, Kerala unit, has developed a service and payroll administrative repository for the Secretariat. The system has already been implemented in the Finance Department. Data entry for the General Administration Department is under way. Each employee is allocated a digital identification and his service record, pay scale and other details are stored in the electronic depository. The data can be transferred to other departments if the employee is transferred. The web-enabled system will later be extended to Government offices outside the Secretariat and linked to the Accountant General's office and treasuries. The centre has also developed a programme for automation of several functions of the Regional Transport Offices. Touch screen systems can be used by members of the public to obtain various services such as allocation of dates for driving tests. The test also can be taken on a computerised system. Other services incorporated into the touch screen system include booking of fancy registration numbers and tax calculation. The status of various files with the Motor Vehicles Department can also be obtained through the system by members of the public. The centre has plans to develop similar service delivery systems for employment exchanges and treasury. Coin validators and thermal printers can be attached to the system so that the departments can collect fees for certain services. The printer can be used for issuing acknowledgements and details of the transactions. The system planned for the treasury is a secure one that can provide details about pension accounts, fixed deposits and the like.
