School admission

Bidar: The test for admissions to Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya will be held on June 12, 2005. Students will be admitted to the ninth standard for the year 2005-06. Application forms will be available at the office of the Deputy Director of Public Instruction and at the Block Education Officer's offices in all taluk. The forms can also be obtained from the school's office in Narayanpur in Basavakalyan taluk.

Students who have passed the 8th standard and were born between May 1, 1989 and April 30, 1993 are eligible to seek admission. Applications should be sent to the school by April 30. The admission test will be in English and Hindi, a release from the principal said. — Staff Correspondent

Training in horticulture

Bidar: A 10-month training course in horticulture will be held for farmers. Ten men between the ages of 18 years and 30 years will be selected for the training at Chikkajogihalli in Bellary. The course is residential and a stipend will be paid. Details can be obtained from the office of the Senior Assistant Director of Horticulture, Bidar. Candidates can apply with copies of marks card, caste certificate and Record of Tenancy and Cultivation.

Last date for receiving applications is April 18. An interview will be held on April 20 at 10 a.m. at the office of the Senior Assistant Director, a release said. — Staff Correspondent

Four injured

Bidar: Four people were injured when Dalits and Hindus clashed over the use of a plot of land to celebrate Ambedkar Jayanti in Shivapura in Basavakalyan taluk on Thursday.

According to the police, a few college students in the village put up a flag post in a plot belonging to an individual and paid their respects to a photograph of B.R. Ambedkar. The people living in the area objected to the use of the land. They picked a fight with the students and both groups began pelting stones. Three persons received injuries on the head. The injured have been admitted to the taluk government hospital. A case has been registered in the Basavakalyan police station. — Staff Correspondent

Seminar on VAT

Raichur: The Raichur Chamber of Commerce and Industry in association with the Raichur Tax Bar Association has organised a seminar on VAT at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Rangamandir Auditorium here.

In a statement here on Thursday, Mylapur N. Murthy, Honorary Secretary of the chamber said that B.T. Manohar, Chairman of the Taxation Committee, FKCCI, Bangalore; Sanjay Dhariwal, FCA, Bangalore; and D. Venkatesh, Tax Advocate, will speak on the occasion. — Staff Correspondent

Four arrested

Raichur: The Raichur police arrested Syed Saifan, Veeresh alias Ramachari, Azaar, and Mahaboob, and recovered stolen articles, including gold and silver ornaments and cash, from them worth around Rs. 42,400 here on Thursday. They have been remanded in judicial custody.

The Superintendent of Police, P. Harisekaran, said that in the past month, a group of six teenaged boys were involved in thefts and burglary in the city. — Staff Correspondent

Eight injured

Raichur: A bus hit a person on the roadside and collided with a lorry on the Sirguppa-Sindhanur Raod near Dhadesugur in Sindhanur taluk on Wednesday.

Seven passengers on the bus and the man walking on the road were injured. The Sindhanoor Rural Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Dental laboratory

Belgaum: The K.L.E. Institute of Dental Sciences will open its new dental laboratory here on Friday. The laboratory will open on all days. The institute has also announced an introductory offer of 10 per cent discount for the first month. — Staff Correspondent

Central funds to be sought to tackle naxals

BANGALORE: The Government is approaching the Centre for assistance to tackle the naxalite problem. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, who will attend the meeting of the National Development Council (NDC) in New Delhi on Friday, will raise the issue of assistance. He was speaking to presspersons on Thursday. On the issue of Andhra Pradesh's "illegal" irrigation projects using Krishna river waters, he said he will ask the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, to intervene. He will hold consultations with Congress President, Sonia Gandhi, on Cabinet expansion. The Chief Minister said he is looking into the report of the police inquiry into the security lapse during Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao's visit here on Sunday last. — Special Correspondent

Two farmers commit suicide

CHITRADURGA: Two farmers reportedly committed suicide in Holalkere taluk in Chitradurga district on Tuesday. Nagaraja (37), son of Rangappa, a farmer at Hosahalli, consumed poison. Ningappa, son of Horakerappa, an agriculture labourer at Madderu village, Holalkere taluk, reportedly hanged himself from the ceiling of his house. He was reported to have been suffering from a chronic illness. Police have registered cases. — Staff Correspondent

Naga leader arrives in Mysore

MYSORE: The Chairman of National Socialist Council of Nagaland, Izac Muviah, and a nine-member delegation arrived in Mysore on Thursday evening on a private visit. The team visited the Mysore Palace and Brindavan Gardens and will for the night at the Government guesthouse here. Police sources said Mr. Muviah and the delegation will visit St. Philomena's Church before leaving for Bangalore on Friday morning. There was tight security for the delegation at the Government guesthouse. — Staff Correspondent

Decision on seeds approval put off

Bangalore: The Union Government has deferred a decision on renewing marketing licences for three seed varieties developed by the U.S. seeds giant Monsanto which has facilities here. It has also deferred approval for nine others, according to the company's officials here. This may adversely affect the sales of these seeds for the sowing season starting in June. The Genetic Engineering Approvals Committee of the Union Government, a regulatory body, met on Wednesday to discuss applications to renew the marketing licences and approve others. — Special Correspondent

Protest against `assault' on Dalit girl

TUMKUR: About 200 activists of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), Student Federation of India (SFI), Karnataka Pranta Raita Sangha (KPRS), and Slum Dwellers' Protection Committee took out a procession on the main streets of Tumkur and staged a demonstration at the Swatantrya Chowk on Thursday evening in protest against the behaviour of two leaders of Bajrang Dal towards a Dalit girl. They said a Dalit girl from Dakshina Kannada was "physically and mentally" assaulted by two Bajrang Dal leaders. — Staff Correspondent

Panel on Congress Bhavan dissolved

Bangalore: In an interesting development, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President, B. Janardhana Poojary, has dissolved a committee headed by the former Minister D.K. Shivakumar which had been constituted to oversee the construction of a new Congress Bhavan. The panel had 21 members. Mr. Poojary has announced that the KPCC itself will look after the construction of the building. According to party sources, the action has been taken to keep the construction above controversies. — Special Correspondent

Boy dies as lightning strikes

T. Narsipura: Manikanta (15) of Vatal village in T. Narsipura taluk died after being struck by lightning on Wednesday. The incident took place when the region was lashed by heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning. Manikanta was seated in the verandah when the incident occurred. Petrol bunks to observe bandh

Mysore: The Mysore Region Petroleum Dealers Association will observe a bandh on April 18 as a result of which all petrol bunks in Mysore, Mandya, Chamarajanagar and Madikeri districts will remain closed from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. The bandh has been called in support of their long-pending demands that include reduction of taxes and surcharges imposed on petrol and diesel, better commission which has been stagnant for the last 10 years despite the rate going up by 40 per cent and withdrawing the increase in the rates of petrol and diesel. The association also called for an immediate ban on sale of kerosene and other chemicals as fuel. — Staff Reporter

Heritage walk

Mysore: The Mayor, Dakshinamurthy, will lead a heritage walk for children participating in a programme at the Dasara Exhibition Grounds. The walk will commence from the Town Hall at 10 a.m. The walk will cover places of tourist interest and heritage value including the Palace, K.R. Circle, Devaraja Market, Lansdowne Building and the office of the Mysore City Corporation. — Staff Reporter
