NEW DELHI: : The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has set its foothold in Kerala by opening a Special Crime Branch in Kochi. According to a CBI spokesman here, the new office in Kochi would function under the administrative control of the Chennai regional office that has jurisdiction over Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Pondicherry and Lakshadweep. The Kochi branch of the CBI would have its jurisdiction over entire Kerala. The DIG and Superintendent of Police, Chennai, would have the administrative control over the Kochi branch. The decision to set up a branch in Kochi was prompted by the fact that a large number of cases were being referred to the CBI by the High Court in Kerala. Nearly two-thirds of the total cases in the Southern region given to the CBI for investigation between 1997 and 2004 were from Kerala. The agency was spending a fortune on travelling and other expenses to its officers who had to make a number of trips from Chennai to Kochi. The order to set up the Kochi branch was passed by the CBI Director, U.S. Misra, last week under the provisions of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act.
