KOCHI.: The Delhi Metro Railway Corporation (DMRC) has entrusted the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) to conduct a rapid Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) of the proposed metro rail project in Kochi. The School of Environmental Studies and School of Engineering at Cusat will be conducting the study. A team of researchers from the university conducted a route survey through the rail route beginning from Aluva on Tuesday. The report of the EIA is likely to be submitted by the end of May. Air quality prediction, water, noise, land and biological environment will be taken up for study by researchers from the university. The impact of the project on transportation and socio-economic environment will also be investigated. The team will study the problems related to land acquisition for the project. An assessment of the existing vehicular movement along the proposed route will be done during the study period. The existing ambient air quality from Aluva to Tripunitura will be analysed. Studies will be initiated on the impact on the green cover along the 30-km route due to the project.
Water quality
During the study, the team members will find out the main source of noise along the project route. The quality of surface water and groundwater will be analysed. The study will be conducted as per the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Environment and Forests for conducting EIA.
