Cell phone initiative to alert Maoist targets

Staff Reporter

Live updates on naxal moves

ANANTAPUR: In another novel effort, the Anantapur district police have launched the "Target Message Service (TMS)'' to alert people's representatives and activists of all political parties, who have threat from Maoists, from the village-level.

The alerting mechanism, however, benefits only the users of cell phones, that too when they are in the coverage area.

Launching the service here on Thursday, the Superintendent of Police, R.S. Praveen Kumar, explained that the targets of Maoists would be alerted through cell phone messages by the police, immediately after getting any kind of information on the increased threat perception with the movement of dalams in their areas or the likelihood of Maoist attack.

The Maoist targets would be fed with information on the movement of Maoists continuously to prevent incidents of violence.

The police had already collected the cell phone numbers of all those who were facing threat from Maoists, the SP said.

Sanjeevani booklet

The targets would be given cell messages (TMS) like "dalam mee arealo digindi dayachesi ontariga tiragakandi - SP, Anantapur'' (a dalam is moving around in your area. Don't venture out alone).

Another message asking the targets to read "Sanjeevani'', a booklet printed by the district police suggesting precautionary measures to be taken by the targets would also be sent to the targets. Besides, the booklet would also be sent to the targets.

The SP appealed to villagers to form "Rakshaka Dalams'' to protect themselves from possible attacks from Maoists
