"Phule's ideals still relevant"

Staff Reporter

The Governor, Sushil Kumar Shinde, garlanding the statue of B.R. Ambedkar at Kakatiya University in Warangal on Thursday.

WARANGAL: The Governor Sushil Kumar Shinde, described Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule as great reformers who brought about a great social revolution and whose thinking is still relevant to society.

The Governor, after inaugurating the statues of Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule on the Kakatiya University premises here on Thursday, pointed out that it was Phule who strove hard to establish an alternative political force fighting against the brahmanical ideology 150 years ago.

Carrying forward Phule's thought, B R Ambedkar waged a relentless struggle against the caste system and succeeded in uniting the socially backward classes. The Governor wanted each of educated persons to change at least five illiterates into literate and thus perpetuate Phule's ideals. The Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, S. Jaipal Reddy, said Phule fought for equal status for women at a time when women were discriminated elsewhere in the world.

The Kakatiya University Vice-Chancellor, V. Gopal Reddy, the Major Irrigation Minister, Ponnala Lakshmaiah, the Civil Supplies Minister, K. Vijayarama Rao,the MLAs - M. Satyanarayana Reddy and B. Saraiah were present.
