Police arrest man on theft charge, seize property

MULKI: The Police claimed to have solved five cases reported from different police station limits in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts with the arrest of Arif (19), a resident of Kunjibettu in Udupi district. They have recovered property worth Rs. 2.7 lakhs from him.

The police wanted Arif in a robbery case allegedly committed with Nissar at Kubevuru in Mulki Police Station limits recently.

He was also wanted in connection with the theft of a rock-drilling machine from Shivalli in Manipal Police Station limits, chain-snatching incidents reported from Uppinangady and Manipal police station limits and a theft at Gundibailu in Udupi Police Station limits.

Police said Arif, who was arrested in connection with a chain-snatching case at Manipal in 2004, had obtained bail. He subsequently jumped bail forcing the authorities to issue a non-bailable warrant against him.

After lying low for some time, Arif joined hands with Nissar and continued his activities, the police said.

Referring to the robbery case at Kubevuru, police said Arif and Nissar approached Roopesh Kumar Jha, a resident of Bihar working as a contractor, at his house near here on the pretext of selling him a mobile phone. When Mr. Jha refused to buy it, the two forced their way into his house and took away a mobile phone and Rs. 1,500 in cash, the police said.
