MADURAI: : Entry will be restricted at Madurai Kamaraj University as a series of measures have been initiated by the administration following incidents of outsiders playing cards in the campus and house-breaking attempts reported from the residential quarters of staff last week. As a first step, the authorities have decided to have intense patrolling of the campus to prevent outsiders' activity in the premises. Separate gates at the main entrance would soon be installed for staff and outsiders so as to identify each and every person entering the campus. "We will start from the entry point. I always find people entering the university even in the early hours," says P. Maruthamuthu, Vice-Chancellor. Vigil by security guards will be stepped up simultaneously. The authorities are keen to have fencing around the entire campus and a compound wall on the front side as part of a face-lift plan.
Security staff inadequate
A few senior level staff, however, pointed out that the number of security guards deployed at present was not enough as only 23 are available for the huge campus. The security personnel are recruited from Tamil Nadu Ex-Servicemen's Corporation Limited (TEXCO). Earlier, there were 34 guards but the number was reduced as part of cost-cutting measures. A few heads of department have suggested to the Vice-Chancellor that there should be more vigil around the science departments, in particular, that have research equipment worth crores of rupees.
