`Boycott movies of Tamil denigrators'

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Tamil Protection Movement (TPM) has appealed to the people to boycott movies produced by those "who insulted Tamil and treated Tamil people as simple-minded."

In a release here, the TPM said it had no intention of intimidating anybody in the tinsel world. "But it is our duty to defeat attempts by anyone to spoil the traditional arts of Tamils or denigrate the language."

Tiruchi meeting

The demand relating to the film field was part of a 10-point programme announced by the TPM at the Tiruchi meeting held last month to announce the third language agitation. However, an impression was sought to be created that the movement was launched only for getting film titles changed.

The TPM appealed to its activists to concentrate on the preparatory work for the third language agitation slated for May 23 without wasting their energy on opposing actors.

Violence

Meanwhile, police said there were stray incidents of violence in some towns in the wake of tensions caused by the release of blockbusters starring Rajnikant, Kamal Hassan and Vijay.

Banners or hoardings were torn down and tensions built up in front of cinema halls in many centres.

The police resorted to a "mild lathicharge" in some places. They dispersed agitated crowds to prevent violence, a senior police officer said.
