THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The new television channel, Amrita TV, was launched in a glittering ceremony organised at the Mar Ivanios College grounds on Thursday evening. The noted danseuse Sonal Mansingh, the music director Bhupen Hazarika, the producer of Sholay Ramesh Sippy, the French producer Manuel de la Rouges, Mammootty, Mohanlal and Swami Amrita Swaroopananda Puri lighted the traditional lamp to mark the launch of the channel. At the function, the Amrita Film Fraternity awards for the best film and best director were given away to `Kazhcha' directed by Blessey. Mammootty who played the lead role in the film was given the award for the best actor and Yash the best child artiste award. The awards were instituted by Trivandrum Film Fraternity, an organ of cinema professionals based in Thiruvananthapuram, in association with Amrita Television. Geethu Mohandas got the best actress award for her performance in `Akale' directed by Shyama Prasad. The best supporting actor's award went to Lalu Alex for his role in `Manjupoloru Penkutty' and the best supporting actress to KPAC Lalitha for her performance in `Nattu Rajavu.' `Perumazhakkalam' directed by Kamal had bagged six awards. T.A. Razak who wrote the screenplay is the best scenarist, M. Jayachandran and Kaithapram Damodaran Namboodiri won the awards for the best music director and best lyricist. Madhu Balakrishnan won the best male playback singer award. Sujatha won the best female singer award.
