NEW DELHI: Giving disadvantaged children a New Year gift, the Ayyapa Sewa Samithi awarded 108 educational scholarships to visually impaired as well as economically disadvantaged children here on Thursday. An attempt to reach out to the marginalised sections of society, the scholarships were awarded by the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, T.A.K. Nair. On an evening that the children will remember, scholarships were handed out to children from the blind schools, Central Schools, Kerala and Tamil schools. The scholarships, which are given on the recommendation of principals at the schools to deserving candidates, have helped many students find new avenues. The scholarship amount is Rs. 2,500 per child. The Samithi distributed scholarships to the tune of Rs. 2,70,000 to children, including 40 blind students.Celebrating its silver jubilee this year, the Samithi is a charitable society that has been doing its bit for the community in addition to managing the affairs of the Lord Ayyapa Temple. Apart from granting scholarships, the Samithi is also involved in other humanitarian projects.
