Sathyamangalam seeks financial sanction for UGD

Staff Reporter

Rs. 10-crore plan to be chalked out

ERODE: The Sathyamangalam municipal administration has appealed to the Centre to sanction Rs. 10 crores to establish Underground Drainage (UGD) system in Sathyamangalam.

`Model municipality'

Talking to The Hindu on Thursday, Sathyamangalam Municipal Chairman, S.A. Saleem, said: "Sathyamangalam would be made a model municipality in the State, and most of the basic needs of the municipality have been provided". A plan has been drawn for the establishment of UGD. He said that a private consultation agency had given a project report to implement the plan at Rs. 13 crores. As the municipality wanted the cost to be reduced, a revised project report was awaited. The fund sanction was sought under the National River Conservation Programme (NRCP).

Garbage disposal

Mr. Saleem said that Sathyamangalam municipality was taking all efforts for proper garbage disposal and sought Rs. 1.13 crores as Government subsidy to implement solid waste management.

Now, the waste was manually segregated as biodegradable and non-biodegradable to produce organic manure.

But, this process took six months. A subsidy of Rs. 38 lakhs was sought to introduce wind rows for the production of organic manure.

Supply everyday

The Health Department was taking all efforts, including periodical raids by Sanitary Inspector, S. Kadar Basha, to prevent adulteration.

As per Government norms, water was supplied to residents here every day, at 130 litres per head.

Mr. Saleem said that though the annual revenue of the municipality was only Rs. 1.30 crores, development works were implemented at Rs. 1.70 crores, with Government subsidies and MLA, MP Constituency Development Funds.
