Found murdered

Tuticorin: Velusamy (37), a lorry owner, was found murdered here on Friday.

The police said the body was found on Harbour Main Road with stab wounds. He attended a function of Lorry Owners Association held here on Thursday.

Man attacked

Tuticorin: Six persons attacked a 39-year-old man with bottles and inflicted injuries on his chin at Caldwell Colony here on Thursday. He was admitted to the Tuticorin Government Hospital.

Woman killed

Tuticorin: Sam Devasahayam (19) was arrested on Friday on a charge of killing his mother, Daisy, at Satankulam on Thursday.

The police said the body was found at the terrace of her house. The accused murdered her as he suspected her fidelity.

Two arrested

Tuticorin: Seenu and Ramanaiah were arrested here on Friday for deceiving Muthulingam.

The accused along with Ravi, a native of Guntur in Andhra Pradesh, approached Muthulingam on March 31 and offered half a kilogram gold ingot for sale.

They demanded Rs.50,000 but after negotiations, the trio agreed to exchange the ingots for four sovereign of gold jewels and Rs.2,000 in cash. Later, Muthulingam learnt the bars were made of some low cost metal. Ravi is still at large.

Residents court arrest

Nagercoil: The police arrested on Friday 40 people of Ayanvilai near Palliyadi when they tried to observe a fast in front of the railway station here without obtaining prior permission from the authorities concerned.They were urging for constructing a footpath in the Ayanvilai railway line. — Staff Reporter

Deputy Speaker's directive

PERAMBALUR : The Deputy Speaker, A. Arunachalam, has directed Tamil Nadu Electricity Board officials to complete the work on setting up a sub-station at Pujankaraya Nallur in the Kunnam union in Perambalur district within a month.

The sub-station has been sanctioned at a cost of Rs.5.25 crores.

Mr. Arunachalam inspected the work and also the work on construction of a girls' hostel for students of Koothur Government Higher Secondary School.

The hostel is being constructed near Kunnam through the Backward Classes Welfare Department at a cost of Rs.31.50 lakhs.

Special buses for entrance exams

PERAMBALUR : The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation will operate special buses to professional courses entrance examination centres on April 23 and 24, the Collector, D. Vivekanandan, has said.

In a release, he said that about 2,200 students would take the examinations to be held at Thanthai Hans Roever College and Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan College at Perambalur.

Special buses would be operated to the centres from 8 a.m. on both the days from the Perambalur Old and New Bus Stands.

Besides, specials would also be operated from Jayamkondam and Ariyalur to the centres, he said.

Earlier, Dr. Vivekanandan chaired a consultative meeting with officials on arrangements made for the examinations in the district.

Tamil varsity's sale of books

Thanjavur : Tamil University has sold Rs. five lakhs worth books last year by giving a rebate of 50 per cent in the price for the benefit of readers, said S. Prema, Vice-Chancellor (in-charge), Tamil University here today.

She inaugurated a sales exhibition of Tamil University publications in the palace complex.

She said that the university had published 24 books and had plans to publish 25 books.

The exhibition would last for a month and a rebate of 50 per cent would be given for books.

A. Ramanathan, Director (in charge) and Annadurai, professor, participated in the meeting.

Mettur level

PERAMBALUR : The water level at the Mettur reservoir stood at 53.41 feet today.

The inflow was 683 cusecs and the discharge 100 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Jewels shop looted

THANJAVUR: Gold and silver ornaments were looted from a shop at Peravurani in Thanjavur district on Thursday night.

Accordigng to the police, the culprits gained entry into Durai Raj Jewellery Shop, making a hole in the rear wall of the shop and took away 250 sovereigns of gold jewellery and some silver ornaments kept in an almirah.

Venkatesan, secretary, Peravurani Traders Association, said that thefts particularly at shops had become a frequent occurence in the town. — Staff Reporter

Special trains

CHENNAI: To clear the extra rush of passengers, Southern Railway is running special trains in the Chennai Egmore - Madurai /Nagercoil sector.

Train 0616 will leave Madurai at 7.15 p.m. on April 24 and arrive here at 6.30 a.m. the next day. Train 0615 will leave Egmore at 11 p.m. on April 25 and reach Madurai at 8.30 a.m. the next day.

Train 0603 will leave Egmore at 8.30 p.m. on March 20 and reach Nagercoil at 12.30 p.m. the next day. In the return direction, it will leave at 1.30 p.m. on March 21 and arrive here at 4.30 a.m. the next day.

New Year celebrations

CHENNAI: The World Federation of Tamil Youth, U.S.A., celebrated Tamil New Year as "Jayalalithaa Day" in recognition of the Chief Minister's "dynamic achievements in ushering peace, prosperity, power and progress of the people of Tamil Nadu."

In Tamil Nadu, the celebrations were held at the panchayat union school grounds, Uthukottai, Tiruvallur district. Vijay G. Prabakar, president, presented portraits of Ms. Jayalalithaa and stainless steel pots to women self-help groups.

The celebrations were held in Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia and the U.S., says a release. — Special Correspondent

Hearing adjourned

CHENNAI : The Madras High Court on Friday adjourned to July 18 further hearing on the State Government appeal against a single judge order reinstating the compulsorily retired forest ranger, R. Rajendran.

On April 11, the First Bench comprising the Chief Justice Markandey Katju and Justice F.M. Ibrahim Kalifulla admitted the appeal and stayed the operation of the March 23 order. When the matter came up for hearing, the Bench extended the stay and posted it to July 18.

While the Government compulsorily retired Mr. Rajendran on charges of "doubtful integrity," Justice Prafulla Kumar Misra quashed the order holding that the action was arbitrary and against the principles of natural justice and service jurisprudence. — Staff Reporter

Hacked to death

MADURAI: Balusamy (67) hacked his 65-year-old wife to death, suspecting her fidelity at a village near here on Thursday night.

The police said Balusamy who `divorced' through local `panchayat' a couple of years ago was living separately at Salupapatti in Tirumangalam police sub-division.

He slashed her with a sickle when the woman was looking after the cattle. She died on the spot. The Saptur police have arrested Balusamy. — Staff Reporter

Affiliation to college

CHENNAI: Following an enquiry into reports of students being awarded unfairly low internal marks in the November-December 2004 examinations, the Syndicate of Anna University on Friday resolved to withdraw provisional affiliation to Deen Dayal Engineering College. The Syndicate will recommend that the State Government sanction transfer of all its students to other engineering colleges. — Staff Reporter

Elected unopposed

Krishnagiri: Five panchayat ward councillors were elected unopposed, as Thursday was the last day to withdraw nominations. The election for vacancies in the local body is on April 19.

The District Revenue Officer, Sundaram, said that out of the six panchayat ward vacancies, five wards including first ward in Thavarakarai, first ward in Agaram, first ward in Jinjanapalli and Kammampalli and fourth ward in Bethanapalli were elected unopposed. Election for the 21st ward in Shoolagiri and 10th ward in Krishnagiri municipality would count votes on April 20. - Staff Reporter

AUT rally

ERODE: Demanding the Erode Arts College management to revoke the suspension orders of a Computer Science Professor and concede the demands of the college teachers of the college, the members of the Association of University Teachers (AUT), conducted a rally on Thursday from Erode Municipal Central Bus Stand to Erode Taluk Office. The AUT Zone IV president, V. Ambalavanan, led the rally. About 250 college teachers belonging to AUT from Erode, Namakkal and Coimbatore districts participated. - Staff Reporter

Worker killed

Erode: A worker of a hardware shop here died in a road accident on Thursday. According to the police, Govindan (36), father of four female children, was working at a hardware shop on KNK Road. Govindan died when the auto he was travelling in carrying iron rods fell on its side and the rods fell on him. - Staff Reporter

Erode: As many as 156 students from Classes IX to XII, belonging to handloom weavers family were distributed education grant of Rs. 900 each on Thursday by the Erode MLA, K. S. Thennarasu. - Staff Reporter

Tenth year celebrations

CHENNAI: DRBCCC Hindu College, Pattabiram, celebrated its college day and sports day with a prize distribution function on Friday. The vice-chancellor of the University of Madras, S.P. Thygarajan, was the chief guest. On the occasion, Rs. 1 lakh was handed to him towards restoration of the Senate House. He also released a souvenir of the 10th year celebrations. Prizes were distributed to academic toppers, regular attendees and teaching staff.

Philatelic exhibition

CHENNAI: A philatelic exhibition on the Dandi March and Vedaranyam March will be held at the Anna Road Head Post Office, organised by the Department of Posts and the South India Philatelists' Association. Also on display will be stamps on railways, stamps and coins issued by the Vatican City on the Pope, and other themes such as animals, medicine and Discover Australia. The exhibition will be open on all Saturdays of April between 10 a.m. and 5.30 p.m.

Stage artiste dead

CHENNAI: Veteran stage artiste Bhagirathi Narayan, a long-time member of Madras Players in Chennai, an English theatre group, collapsed on stage and died on Friday evening. Ms. Narayan, a person with 40 years of experience and known to friends as Bhagyam, was performing at Unwind Centre in Aminjikarai when she collapsed. Her friends rushed her to a private hospital at Anna Nagar, where efforts to revive her failed.

She was enacting a part in `Girl-A tribute,' a Stagefright production.

DRAT chairperson

CHENNAI: Justice K. Gnanaprakasam, a retired judge of the Madras High Court, assumed charge as the chairperson of Debt Recovery Appellate Tribunal here on Friday. Mr. Justice Gnanaprakasam became a Judge of the Madras High Court on June 9, 1997, and attained superannuation on June 30, 2004. The DRAT chairperson post fell vacant after Justice A. Subbulakshmi passed away on June 8 last year.
