Former Minister convicted in wealth case

Special Correspondent

CUDDALORE: The former Dairy Development Minister, D. Janardhanan, who held office during the earlier All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam regime (1991-96), was on Friday convicted in a disproportionate wealth case and sentenced to undergo rigorous imprisonment for two years and pay a fine of Rs. 50,000.

The Chief Judicial Magistrate, S. Boothanathan, however, acquitted J. Prema, wife of Mr. Janardhanan.

The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption wing filed the charge sheet on June 15, 1998 alleging that during his tenure as Minister Mr. Janardhanan and his wife amassed over Rs. 56 lakhs, beyond their known means of income.

The cases were filed under Section 13(2) read with Section 13(e) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. An additional charge was levelled against Ms. Prema under Section 109 of the Indian Penal Code (abetting the offence).

Mr. Janardhanan paid the fine amount. The sentence was suspended and he was released on bail. The CJM gave him time till May 13, to appeal in the Madras High Court.
