CITU plans to launch agitation

Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA: The CITU district unit here has said that it will oppose any move to transfer 50 acres of land belonging to Travancore Sugars and Chemicals Limited (TSCL) at Pulikeezhu, near Thiruvalla, to a group of private entrepreneurs.

In a statement here today, the CITU district secretary, K.C. Rajagopalan, said that the TSCL was situated in 85 acres of land on the banks of River Pampa. The company started sugar production in 1948, but had to stop it years ago owing to shortage of raw materials.

However, TSCL has been producing Indian Made Foreign Liquor for the past several years. And besides officers, there are 114 workers at the factory.

The management had sold the machinery for Rs. 2.12 crores following shut-down of the sugar unit, he said.

Mr. Rajagopal alleged that instead of reviving TSCL by diversifying its activities, the Government was trying to sell the factory premises to private parties in the name of "industrial development and investment promotion."

The CITU leader alleged that there was reason to suspect the motive behind the move to lease out TSCL land for 99 years to non-resident Keralites.

CITU would launch an agitation against the proposal if the Government went ahead with it, Mr. Rajagopal said.
