KOLLAM: Under a programme drawn up by the Kollam unit of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), more than 60 domesticated tuskers were today administered the prophylactic anti-rabies vaccination. The programme, held at the Asramam Sri Krishnaswamy Temple complex here, is the first of its kind to be organised in the State. It was the panic which erupted after the death of a rabid tusker in Kollam on March 19 which compelled the SPCA to organise such a programme. More than two hundred persons who came into contact with that tusker had to be administered the anti-rabies vaccination. The Kollam Pooram held today enabled the SPCA volunteers to get a good number of tuskers at the same place simultaneously for the vaccination. The process began at 9 a.m. and was administered by an expert team of veterinary surgeons led by the technical consultants to the SPCA, B. Aravind and D. Shine Kumar. Dr. Shine Kumar said that today's was the first phase of the vaccination programme in the district. As per records there are 120 domesticated elephants in the district. All of them would be covered through the programme in the next two phases. The programme would then be extended to other districts too.
