Liquor shop applicants force banks' closure

Staff Reporter

CUDDAPAH: Irate liquor shop applicants forced closure of four bank branches in Kodur town on Friday, demanding encashment of their demand drafts returned by excise officials. The applicants gathered at the State Bank of India, Syndicate Bank, Andhra Bank and Rayalaseema Grameena Bank branches in Kodur to encash DDs. When bankers refused to oblige them until instructed by income tax officials, the DD-holders entered into wordy duels with the bank officials. The latter demanded clearance of DDs, not listed in the IT list. As bedlam prevailed, bankers downed shutters. Tension prevailed and the Kodur Sub-Inspector, Sankaraiah, and staff rushed to the bank branches and dispersed the protesters. The protest caused traffic disruption for two hours.
