Funds for eye institute

Thiruvananthapuram: The Union Ministry of Health will allocate funds for upgrading the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology by installing new and modern equipment in the hospital. The funds for the same has been included in the consolidated indent for 2005-06, for supplying equipment to institutions under the National Programme for Control of Blindness. — Staff Reporter

Art show begins

KOZHIKODE: An exhibition of paintings and artefacts of E. Sudhakaran was opened at the Lalithakala Akademi today evening. Sudhakaran, son of noted novelist Uroob, has held exhibitions in Kochi and Kozhikode earlier. This is his eighth show. It will conclude on till April 16. — Special Correspondent

Collage contest

A `Collage Contest' will be held for school children in connection with sesquicentennial celebrations of the Department of Posts in July.

The contest is being held to increase awareness about India Post among children. The school which bags the first prize will be awarded Rs.100,000 and five students involved in the preparation of the collage will be given Rs.2,000 each. Prizes will be given at all levels of the contest. The national-level prize will be given in Delhi on the `World Post Day' to be observed on October 8. Details about the contest can be had from the Divisional Superintendents of Posts or from the office of the Post Master General in Kozhikode. — Special Correspondent

Appointed CEO

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: R. Mahesh Kumar has been appointed as president and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Asianet Satellite Communications Limited by its Board of Directors. The vacancy was caused by the resignation of C.M. Radhakrishnan Nair following his appointment as a member of the Pay Commission by the State Government. — Special Correspondent

Ornaments stolen

Kasaragod: Eighty sovereigns of gold jewellery worth Rs. 3.7 lakhs were stolen from a house at Mangad near here on Friday, the police said. The burglars entered the house, where a marriage ceremony was solemnised on Thursday, by breaking open the windows of the bedroom of the newly-wedded couple and fled away with a suitcase in which the ornaments were kept, the police said. — PTI

Godown attacked

Kanhangad: Members of a revolutionary outfit, near here, attacked a godown of the Plantation Corporation of Kerala (PCK), where the banned endosulphan pesticide was stored, the police said. They said three members of a local revolutionary outfit, protesting against the possible use of the banned pesticide, damaged the doors, name boards and window glass panes of the godown situated close to the national highway at Periye. — PTI

Akademi schemes

Thrissur: The secretary of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Sreemoolanagaram Mohan has said that the Akademi plans a few schemes to promote traditional art forms. Inaugurating a three-day workshop on puppetry, organised by Rengachetana, here on Friday, Mr. Mohan said that lack of funds was affecting the Akademi's development schemes. G. Venu, director of Natanakairali, said that puppetry bore the essence of ethnic culture. — Staff Reporter

KPCC zonal rally

ALAPPUZHA: The Alappuzha DCC has completed all arrangements for the zonal rally of the KPCC to be held in Kochi on April 16, said the DCC president, C.R. Jayaprakash. The office-bearers of the DCC in the district reviewed the arrangements for the rally yesterday. — Staff Reporter

Felicitation

Thrissur: The chairman of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi, C.L. Jos, will be felicitated by Bharatham at a function at the Regional Theatre here on April 16. The Mayor, K. Radhakrishnan, will preside over the programme. The Speaker, Therambil Ramakrishnan, will address the gathering. Classes on Vedas

KOZHIKODE: Study classes on Vedas conducted under the aegis of Kasyapa Veda Padasala Charitable Trust in Balusserry will begin on April 17.

The classes will be held in three batches. Vedic mantras, Upanishad mantras and evening prayers will be taught at the preliminary level. The second course will deal with `agnihotram;' `atharva veda mantras;' `kenopanishad' and `yoga darsan' while the final course will focus on `tantric ceremonies;' `vastu bali' and `nyaya darsanam.'
