Hailstorm in Chitradurga

CHITRADURGA: Heavy rain and hailstorm damaged horticultural crops causing huge losses in Challakere and Hiriyur taluks. According to reports reaching here, the rainfall and hailstones destroyed sapota, papaya and pomegranate crops in Thippareddy Halli of Challakere taluk on Wednesday. Hundreds of coconut palms were also uprooted in the village in the last 24 hours. K.P. Bhoothaiah, leader of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha has urged the Government to take up relief measures. In Hiriyur taluk 30 sheep were killed when lightning struck them. — Staff Correspondent

Protest

HASSAN: Around 70 villagers of Jakkanayakanahalli, Agile and Kittane took out a procession under the leadership of Deepak Rangaswamy, taluk unit president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, to protest against the dumping of waste on the outskirts of their villages by the Hassan City Municipal Council.

The villagers submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner and said they will intensify the agitation if action is not taken to stop the dumping of waste immediately. — Staff Correspondent

Minister's visit

HASSAN: The Minister for Public Works and in charge of the district, H.D. Revanna, on Friday visited the bereaved families of Shekar and Jagadish of Anagalale village of Sakleshpur taluk, who died when lightning struck them on April 13. The Sakleshpur MLA, Vishwanath, accompanied the Minister, who handed over cheques of Rs. 50,000 each as compensation to both families. — Staff Correspondent

Calls to mobile phones

Bidar: People can make calls to mobile phones from one-rupee coin-operated phones even in rural areas in Bidar district from Saturday. The facility will be extended to mobile phones of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. and private operators. The pulse rate will be reduced to 60 seconds from 90 seconds. The pulse rate for non-coin box STD booths will be 90 seconds for BSNL landlines and WLL phones, 60 seconds for BSNL and 45 seconds for private mobiles, a release said. — Staff Correspondent

Man killed

GULBARGA: A group of armed men reportedly waylaid and killed a man who was travelling from the annual temple fair at Chimmanchod to Mogala tanda in Chincholi taluk in Gulbarga district on Thursday. According to reports reaching the police headquarters here on Friday, the victim, Somappa (40), was stopped by the gang and repeatedly stabbed. The body has been sent to the hospital for a post mortem. — Special Correspondent

Music concert

Bidar: A Hindustani music concert will be held at the Sri Devadatta Digambar Manikeshwar Mutt in Yernalli in Humnabad taluk to celebrate its 35th annual car festival. VAT helpdesks sought

TUMKUR: The Tumkur Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged the Government to open VAT helpdesks. Sugnyan Hiremath, chamber president, said here on Friday that the chamber and the Government recently conducted a series of seminars on value added tax (VAT). Man dies in accident

TUMKUR: A man was killed and five persons were injured when a goods van by they were travelling rammed a wall on the Bangalore-Pune National Highway No. 4 at Kora, near here, on Friday. The police gave the name of the dead as Rangappa (50). The injured Gangappa, Gangappa, Hanumanthappa, Durgesh, and Nagarajappa have been admitted to General Hospital here. — Staff Correspondent

SHIMOGA: The district administration has decided to request the Kannada Sahitya Parishat to hold the 73rd Akhila Bharata Kannada Sahitya Sammelan in Shimoga next year. The President of the Shimoga district parishat, D. Manjunath, said that the quarterly review meeting held here on Wednesday, presided over by the district in-charge and Housing Minister, Anjana Murthy, took this decision. — Special Correspondent

Three arrested

GULBARGA: The Gulbarga district police today claimed a breakthrough in the incident in which an idol at a temple in Kodla in Sedam taluk was damaged. Three persons have been arrested in this regard. The police gave the names of the accused as Yousuf Katalsab, Maruti Chandrappa and Khanappa Iranna. — Special Correspondent

Advocates' Academy

BANGALORE: The Advocates' Academy should not be restricted to Bangalore but should cover all lawyers of the State, the Minister for Law, H.K. Patil, said on Friday. Speaking at the inauguration of the academy of Bangalore Advocates' Association, Mr. Patil said the Government will extend support if such a proposal is placed before it. The Supreme Court Judge, N. Santosh Hegde, asked the advocates to keep themselves up-to-date on legal matters. — Staff Reporter

Media aeminar

MYSORE: Karnataka Media Academy will hold a seminar for owners, publishers and editorial staff of national, regional and local newspapers to discuss the controversial issue of price wars. V.N. Subba Rao, Chairman of the academy, told presspersons here on Friday that the seminar will be held on July 1, Press Day. The academy will hold a meeting with the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, on May 13 to apprise him of the problems facing the media. — Staff Correspondent

24-hour service on World Health Day

DHARWAD: Twenty-four-hour maternity services will be available in select hospitals on the occasion of World Health Day.

The Minister for Health and Family Welfare, N. Cheluvarayaswamy, said that the staff will be taken on contract basis to work in three shifts. Inaugurating the one-day State-level conference of senior and junior health assistants here on Friday, he said that ambulances will be stationed at 27 places identified as accident-prone in the State.

The Minister promised to look into the demands submitted by the Association of Senior and Junior Nurses, which included ensuring eight-hour duty, security for auxiliary nurse midwives, and uniformity in pay scales. — Special Correspondent

Plantations destroyed

Sirsi: A herd of 13 elephants destroyed two acres of plantain and areca plantations at Kuppagadde village, coming under Dasnakoppa Gram Panchayat, in Sirsi taluk.

This is the fifth time that the herd has destroyed plantations over the past four months. Gopalakrishna, Range Forest Officer, and his staff visited the spot and chased the elephants away. — Correspondent

Privatisation opposed

Bhadravati: In a letter the local MLA, B.K. Sangamesh, has urged the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, not to allow the privatisation of Mysore Paper Mills Ltd. He said that the factory has shown signs of improvement.

He urged Mr. Dharam Singh to grant Rs. 450 crores and provide subsidies so that modernisation of the factory can be taken up. — Correspondent

Assurance on demands

Bhadravati: The demands of contract labourers of Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Ltd. (VISL) will be resolved within a month, the local MLA, B. K. Sangamesh, said after holding a discussion with the executive director of VISL, H.K. Roy Chowdhary.

He urged the labourers to cooperate with the management.

The labourers have launched several agitations to pressure the management to fulfil their demands. — Correspondent

Compensation

DHARWAD: The Deputy Commissioner, Gourav Gupta, on Friday handed over compensation of Rs. 50,000 and a letter sanctioning a Ashraya house to Somappa Ningappa Bandeppanavar, a Dalit who suffered burns during the Holi celebrations at the Lakmapur village in Dharwad taluk.

He is still undergoing treatment at the district hospital.

The delay on part of the district administration and police in taking cognisance of the incident, in which the village elders allegedly pushed him into the fire, had been subject of an agitation launched by the Dalits. — Special Correspondent

Four of family

murdered

Hyderabad: Four members of a family — two women and two boys — were killed and four injured when they were attacked by a group in Ranga Reddy district in Andhra Pradesh in the early hours of Friday. Police said the family, hailing from Gulbarga, had shifted to Andhra Pradesh and used to seek alms for a living. A 10-member gang stabbed to death Gurram Bai (60), Gilla Bai (20), Swaraj (17) and Aldi (7). — UNI

Gangubai Hangal

HUBLI: The Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, called on Gangubai Hangal, exponent of Hindustani classical music, on Friday. This was the first visit by a dignitary after the fiasco over a civic reception accorded to her, which resulted in the singer returning a citation and shawl given to her by the Hubli Dharwad Municipal Corporation. But the event did not figure in the conversation between Mr. Chaturvedi and Ms. Hangal. Mr. Chaturvedi told her that he has attended her concerts. — Special Correspondent

Govt. criticised

over pay panel

Bangalore: S. Channa basavaiah, Janata Dal (United) MLC and president of the Karnataka State Teachers and Employees' Federation, on Friday criticised the Government for appointing the retired IAS officer C. Gopal Reddy as the one-man pay commission as it was under his tenure as Additional Chief Secretary that a drastic cut in the salaries was effected. Speaking to presspersons, he alleged that Mr. Reddy was responsible for preparing a scheme to reduce salaries.

The 12th Century social reformer, Basavanna, established Anubhava Mantapa at Basava Kalyana. BANGALORE: The Janata Dal (United) has demanded that the Government ban the sale of arrack to prevent deaths from consuming illicit liquor as happened in a village near Nelamangala in Bangalore Rural district recently.
