No end to THEIR woes: Who cares for the sufferings of those waiting at the bus stop, sans shelter, in front of the General Hospital in Chennai? Photo: S.R. Raghunathan
CHENNAI: Even as the mercury level in the city soars ahead of the onset of summer, shelters at the bus stops in front of the General Hospital, have been removed. This has inconvenienced commuters, many of them coming to the region's biggest tertiary care facility. The bus shelters abutting the hospital compound wall were recently pulled down. The bus shelter at the Simpsons/Periyar Bridge stop on Anna Salai, which was demolished several months ago has not yet been reconstructed, leaving commuters to the mercy of the elements. The commuters' problems are aggravated by the absence of regulation of buses by the MTC, and the autorickshaws parked at the bus stop. In the Nungambakkam Lake Area, buses take a detour along the inside roads as the roads are under repair near Valluvar Kottam. The bus stops in the changed routes do not have shelters. Asked for comment, an MTC official said that shelters would soon be put up in various places in the city.
