TUTICORIN: A three-member team from the Medical Council of India (MCI) on Friday inspected the Tuticorin Medical College and Hospital (TMCH) to verify whether the institution has the infrastructure to provide quality education for 100 students joining MBBS this year. The team, comprising Vandana Kahonalkar, inspector of MCI; Gaekwad and Siddharaj, professors from Mumbai and Bangalore medical colleges, held discussions with the Dean, Thiagavalli Kribakaran. It went round the hospital and medical college premises and checked the facilities in each of the departments, besides having a look at the scan room and the hypertension and diabetology clinics. Speaking to mediapersons, Dr. Vandana Kahonalkar said the team studied the infrastructure and staff strength. Though TMCH officials denied that there was any shortage of doctors, official sources confirmed that a bunch of doctors was `posted' to the TMCH on a six-month contract last month. Liaquat Ali, Deputy Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicines, said 23 doctors, listed in the Professional and Executive Officers Employment exchange, were appointed `contract medical consultants' on March 21. A retired government medical practitioner said had the MCI team checked Form 16 on Income Tax declarations and the salary record, bogus claims of the TMCH officials on staff strength would have come to light. This apart, questions were raised about the infrastructure available in the hospital and college premises.
