Stage set for Congress rally in the city

Staff Reporter

Restrictions on traffic

KOCHI: The Congress is all set to take out a rally in the city once again. After a mammoth rally taken out by Karunakaran loyalists last month, it is the turn of the supporters of Oommen Chandy to exhibit their strength on Saturday.

Guidelines given

"We have given guidelines to take out the rally in three lines without blocking the traffic; six-ft wide banners have been prepared so as to minimise inconvenience. Seva Dal volunteers will try to maintain order," says K.P. Dhanapalan, president of District Congress Committee. But he admits that the huge turnout may upset the plans. The party has advised people to avoid the route during the rally.

Even though there are laws to ensure that the public traffic is not obstructed because of the rally, the police often end up unable to implement them effectively. "We post personnel to ensure traffic on the roads, but cases are charged if it is violated. The convenor of the rally will be booked and often they end up summoned to the court and compounded," said Dinendra Kashyap, City Police Commissioner.

Traffic along the main roads in the city will be diverted from 2 p.m. on Saturday due to the rally.

Heavy vehicles, including buses, coming from Aluva, Cheranalloor and Chittoor to the city should divert from Edappally and reach Vytilla along the bypass. These vehicles, along with those from Tripunithura side, should enter the city via Ravipuram Junction - Foreshore Road - BTH Junction - Hospital Road - DCC Junction - Chittoor Road and South Overbridge and return to Vytilla.

Long-distance buses to the city should end trips at Panampilly Nagar, while KSRTC buses will deviate through Chittoor Road to reach Valanjambalam. Buses plying from Tripunithura to Aluva should go along the bypass and Vytilla-Vytilla circular services should take South Overbridge - Foreshore Road - Hospital Road - DCC Junction - Chittoor Road - GCDA Junction route.

Only two-wheelers will be allowed into the city after the rally begins and four-wheelers should take the routes marked for heavy vehicles.

Parking will not be allowed along both sides of the road between Palarivattom and Marine Drive, Chittoor Road, Old Thevara Road, Foreshore Road and Sahodaran Ayyappan Road up to Valanjambalam. Vehicles parked along these parts will be towed away using recovery vans, said the police.

Vehicles carrying participants to the rally should be parked at Goshree land and pocket roads at Kadavanthra and Panampilly Nagar.
